Master of Education (Special Education)

This degree contains 10 days of professional experience in a special education school, special education unit or an inclusive school environment.

Students will be assessed across both the Graduate and Proficient Levels of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

Placement schools suitable for this professional experience must:

  • Assess teacher proficiency against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers;
  • Use NESA approved syllabuses or equivalent Australian syllabuses;

Planning and Effective Teaching in Special and Inclusive Education Settings

This placement is integrated into the unit EDSP502.  The placement is undertaken in a special school, special education unit or an inclusive school environment. The placement is assessed against the Graduate and Proficient Standards in the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

Specific Information

This is a 10-day block placement in a primary or secondary school setting where the teacher education student will be assessed against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and complete an assessment task lined to the unit.

Placements that can be accepted

  • Inclusive mainstream primary or secondary school classrooms
  • Special School
  • Special Education Unit

Placements that cannot be accepted

  • Work in a distance education setting
  • Work in an Early Childhood Centre
  • Library placement
  • Work in a tutoring agency
  • Work as an au pair
  • Employment as a governess (or equivalent position)
  • Employment as teacher's aide (or equivalent position such as a Learning Support Officer).
