Information for Academic Supervisor

HDR Supervisor Register

Supervisors of HDR candidates must be listed on the Supervisor Register in order to be appointed as either a Principal or Co-Supervisor.

Supervisors must ensure that they are registered to supervise at the appropriate level when agreeing to supervise a candidate.

To apply to be on the Supervisor Register, please complete the Supervisor Registration Form or the Industry Supervisor Registration

Research Supervisor Training

New Research Supervisor Training modules will be available in early 2026. Please contact grs-training@une.edu.au if you have any questions.

Supervising Indigenous Researchers

HDR604: Indigenous Research and Ethics training module is now available. This training is compulsory for UNE higher degree students and supervisors who, as part of their research or supervision, anticipate working with Indigenous communities, engaging with Indigenous knowledges in various forms, or investigating Indigenous issues.

HDR Candidature Requirements

Supervisor Agreement

It is essential that you maintain regular contact with your candidate. All HDR candidates and their supervisors must complete a Supervision Agreement within three months of starting their candidature. This agreement will help establish a professional working relationship and set realistic expectations of supervisors and of their candidates.

Milestones

Milestones are a requirement for all candidates throughout the duration of candidature. For more information refer to the HDR Milestones Policy and procedure.

The Roles & Responsibilities of the Principal Supervisor, Co-Supervisor and Supervisory Team can be found under PART B of the HDR Supervision Policy. You may also find this useful when working through the Supervision Agreement with your candidate.

Graduate Research Committee

The Graduate Research Committee (GRC) functions as a management advisory body, advising the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and supporting the Academic Board by reporting to the Research Committee in relation to all aspects of:

  • Academic rules, policies, procedures and guidelines relating to HDR awards/scholarships, supervision, research training, thesis examination and the overall research candidature experience
  • HDR Supervisors and Supervision
  • Allocation of Research Training Program Scholarships

The Committee aims to support effective two-way communication, reporting, and exchange of ideas between the Faculties, Graduate Research School, Senior Management and Academic Governance regarding all matters relating to higher degree by research.
