Established in 1954
The year 2024 marks the 70th anniversary of the University of New England.
Seven decades ago, on 1 February 1954, UNE separated from the University of Sydney to become Australia’s first independent regional university.
Our platinum jubilee commemorates the ongoing influence of first Vice Chancellor Robert Madgwick and first Chancellor Sir Earle Page, and former and current staff, students and supporters who picked up their vision and shaped it into our university.
Over the course of 2024, join us to reflect on our rich history, honour the achievements of our alumni, and envision an even brighter future for UNE.

A walk through 70 years of UNE
Over seven decades, the University of New England has grown from humble beginnings and given generations of students a place to learn and play (and occasionally protest). This slideshow shows what has changed across the years – and what has stayed the same. Thanks to the support of the UNE Archives and Heritage Centre for this production.
Celebrating 70 years of UNE
"They built a university that had never been seen before." UNE Vice-Chancellor Chris Moran talks about the origins of the university as we celebrate the milestone of 70 years.
