Indigenous Student Success at UNE

The University of New England has a long and sustained record of actively working to improve higher education and employment outcomes for Indigenous Australians. The Oorala Aboriginal Centre, founded at UNE more than 30 years ago, is both a reflection of this long-term commitment to Indigenous higher education, and an integral part of the continuing strategic and functional efforts of the University to improve the access to - and outcomes for - Indigenous students in higher education.

The university is proud of the academic success of our now more than 1000 Indigenous Australian graduates and remains encouraged by our sustained year-on- year ability to attract and increase, the number of Indigenous Australians who choose to enrol and study at our Institution. We are committed to ensuring that we retain and support these students to complete their studies. This commitment to improving higher education outcomes for Indigenous Australians is embedded in UNEs current Strategic Plan; represented in our current Indigenous Education Strategy, and reflected in our inaugral Reconciliation Action Plan.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategy

The University of New England (UNE) provides a platform to improve employment outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Indigenous Student Success Program (ISSP)

The Indigenous Student Success Program (ISSP) is an Australian Government initiative currently administered by the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA). Commenced in 2017, the Program provides supplementary funding to universities to help Indigenous students take on university study and achieve successful outcomes.  As an obligation of receipt of this funding, UNE is required to prepare and publish an annual Performance Report. This Performance Report is expected to include key performance data for the preceding calendar year, as well as outline the key strategies of governance, education and employment used by the University for improving the access, participation, retention and success of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
