Advanced Standing

UNE can help lessen the number of units you need to study to be awarded your qualification. If you have completed a tertiary qualification, or even part of a qualification or units within a course at UNE you may be eligible to apply for Advanced Standing. This is sometimes referred to as credit or recognition of prior learning.

How does it work?

UNE may award advanced standing for formal study, partial and professional experience for Education students and established credit arrangements. Credit is generally assessed on an individual basis with each application being assessed by the relevant School. For more information on Advanced Standing go to the Advanced Standing Application Guidelines.

Students and applicants can find out further information at the following:

When will I receive notification of My Advanced Standing Outcome

It is important that you submit an application for Advanced Standing as early as possible. Please note that applications with a large number of units for assessment may take longer to be finalised.

The assessment of your advanced standing application can take approximately 8 weeks to complete. As soon as a final outcome is known you will receive an email notification.

Your application must include all of the required information so that an accurate assessment can be undertaken. If your application does not contain all of the necessary information you be will be sent an email advising you of this. This will delay the assessment of your application.

Helpful hints to ensure you receive an outcome within a timely manner:

  • Have you stated which UNE units you are seeking credit for on the Online Advanced Standing Form?
  • Have you supplied a complete official academic transcript that has been certified by a Justice of the Peace
  • Are the unit descriptions provided from the year you completed the units at the previous institution
  • Have you provided Professional Experience(Practicum) Reports for Education courses at the initial submission of your Advanced Standing Application
  • For all Law Advanced Standing Applications please provide a web link of your previous institution which displays the course structure containing the law units already studied

Advanced Standing and Advanced Standing Pathways

If you have completed units at another institution, or in a different degree at UNE, you may apply for Advanced Standing which may reduce the time it will take to complete your degree. The University may:

  • grant advanced standing for formal study undertaken in recognised tertiary institutions in Australia, including universities, colleges, TAFE (Diploma and above),  registered training organisations and overseas institutions
  • grant advanced standing for the recognition of prior learning.

For more information, refer to the Advanced Standing Policy, Advanced Standing Procedures and Advanced Standing Application Guidelines

Future Applicants

If you are applying for advanced standing and you are currently enrolled in a course and will not receive results before the advanced standing closing date please apply for all units, even the ones you are currently enrolled in at the other institution. Once you have completed all units you need to provide a completed certified transcript. Please note advanced standing will not be finalised until the complete transcript is received.

UAC and QTAC Applicants

If you are an applicant applying for admission through UAC and QTAC you must submit an online advanced standing application directly to UNE.

Advanced Standing for Articulation Programs or Block Advanced Standing

UNE offers courses with Articulation or Block Advanced Standing Programs and some courses you will need to provide relevant documentation at the time of applying for admission or submit a formal online advanced standing application if specified units are listed in your course program. Please refer to the Courses and Unit Catalogue to determine whether you need to submit a formal online advanced standing application. If the course states block credit you do not need to submit a formal online advanced standing application all you need to do is submit relevant documents at the time of applying for admission to a course. If the course lists specified units under the block credit you will need to submit a formal online advanced standing application (eg Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary).

Seeking Advanced Standing for Experiential or Informal Learning within the UNE Business School

Students applying for advanced standing on the basis of experiential and informal learning (including work experience), for a unit offered by the UNE Business School, will be required to sit a Challenge Exam. There is a fee for each Challenge Exam. The student sits the exam in the next available University exam period. A student who passes a Challenge Exam is then granted advanced standing for the particular unit.

Advanced Standing towards UNE Law Courses

If you are applying for advanced standing towards UNE Law Courses you should refer to the Important Information from Course Coordinator and Legal Profession Admission Board Information.

For applications relating to law units previously undertaken, you need to include a link to a web page from the institution or a course structure where you studied that law unit. This web page or course structure should indicate the list of units available as part of a law degree at that institution. The unit(s) you studied should be on that list.  Only law units that are offered as part of a law degree can receive advanced standing. The point in providing the  link or the course structure is so that we can not only check that the unit you are seeking credit for is offered as part of the law degree at the institution you studied at, but how the unit fits within the structure of law units offered at the previous institution.

When applying for advanced standing towards a UNE Law Course you must submit the following:

  • Completed Online Advanced Standing Application Form (indicating for which UNE units you are seeking advanced standing based on your previous studies)
  • A complete copy of an academic transcript showing all grades, verified by a Justice of the Peace. We do not accept individual result slips or web downloads.
  • Unit outlines from the year you completed the units including the following: description of the unit, aims, objectives, assessments, unit weighting, a list of reference books and textbooks.

Furthermore, please note that previously completed psychology units that were completed at 300 level cannot be granted at 400 level.
