Adopt an Artefact

Cultural collections preserve the past to promote the future. UNEMA’s Adopt-an-Artefact program enables members of the community to make a tax-deductible donation to sponsor the conservation of artefacts in need of assistance. 100% of funds donated to conserve the Museum’s collections are used to help preserve UNEMA’s artefacts for future generations.

"This program is a great way to help preserve the cultural heritageof our communities for everyone to enjoy both now and into the future."

Anyone can adopt an artefact to help preserve the outstanding cultural collections UNEMA makes available to the New England. You can choose to adopt one of the Artefacts-In-Need shown here on this website or to make a general donation to UNEMA’s conservation fund. If adopting an artefact, you can choose to adopt one by yourself or team-up with others to make a group adoption.

When you adopt an artefact you will receive an Adoption Package providing information about your chosen artefact, public acknowledgment of your support (if wanted), behind-the-scenes information about the conservation work undertaken to help preserve and protect your artefact, and an invitation for a private viewing of the artefact following conservation.

All conservation work is contracted to professional conservators. The cost of supporting the conservation of an artefact is listed on this webpage with each of the artefacts identified as an Artefact-In-Need, and any donation for conservation of $2 or more is fully tax-deductible. UNEMA is very grateful for every donation that supports the conservation of its collections.

MA1963.5.1 Red Figure Attic Kylix

Χαίρετε (that’s Greek for hello). I am an exquisite 5th century BC red figure Attic Kylix (drinking cup) that knows how to party. Sadly, in addition to the beautiful palmette decorations and people adorning my rim, some surface residue from my storage cabinet has attached itself to my classical lines. These hardened globs require careful professional cleaning. Can you help me?

MA1983.3.2 Roman Glass Bottle

Salve! (that’s Latin for Hello). I’m a c.2nd century AD amber-coloured, free-blown, Roman glass bottle with white glass trailing spiralling around my girth. Unfortunately, my fragile lip has sustained some damage that requires remedial surgery. Can you help me?

MA1965.2.1 Southern Italian Askos

Greetings. I’m M. Porcius Cato, a 5th century BC southern Italian drinking vessel fashioned in the shape of a wild boar and the unofficial mascot of UNEMA. When I arrived at UNEMA I didn’t have a leg to stand on (I guess you could say I was legless!). A former curator kindly made some forelegs for me. Unfortunately, those legs are all wrong – they’re bent the wrong way and made from unsuitable material. Can you help me get some new prosthetic legs?

MA2012.39.1 Mycenaean Terracotta Bird Figurine

G’day, I’m a small terracotta bird figurine from Mycenaean Greece c.1400 BC. Perhaps you can see the glue join on my neck where I was repaired before I arrived at UNEMA? The glue used to make that repair has failed, so I’m currently in two pieces.  Can you help me become whole again?
