Research Proposal Information and Requirements:

Supervision Acceptance: Acceptance by a staff member is based upon a variety of factors including but not limited to the following:

  • The academic record of the student;
  • The availability of appropriate supervision in the proposed topic;
  • The viability of the suggested topic

Requirements: Students are required to submit a 1000 word research proposal to a proposed supervisor as part of the consultation process, not less than SIX weeks prior to the start of teaching in the trimester they wish to enrol in.

The proposal should make clear the nature of the question to be investigated, and how the project will address the research question(s). A proposal should also demonstrate that some preparatory work has been completed, and that you have been thinking about the scale and scope of the project and looking for any existing literature on your topic. Approval is dependent on the availability of supervision and resources.

  • The rationale and aims of the project, including the main thrust of your research, its central issues or question(s) to be addressed (300 words)
  • The research methodologies you will engage with in this project, and why. IE how do you propose investigating your research question(s)? (300 words)
  • A brief bibliography/reference list of research resources for the project. This should typically include key primary texts or creative work that you propose to study in depth and secondary or scholarly/critical texts that other investigators of the topic have published and/or that help you to develop a methodology (200 words).
