Competencies of Professional Psychology Rating Scales 2.0 (COPPR 2.0)

Dr Kylie Rice (University of New England) and colleagues developed the Competencies of Professional Psychology Rating Scales ([COPPR Scales] Rice et al., 2022, 2025). The COPPR Scales were developed to guide psychologists in reflecting on and assessing their competencies.

In recognition of the updated APAC Standards and Psychology Board of Australia Professional Competencies for Psychologists, the COPPR Scales have since been updated as the Competencies of Professional Psychology Rating Scales 2.0 (COPPR 2.0). The COPPR 2.0 follows the original format in that it has both a self-report version for psychologists and trainees to complete on their own competencies, and an observer version for supervisors to complete for their supervisees. A new clinical subscale has also been added to enable the COPPR to be applied in clinical training pathways (based on APAC Level 4 Clinical endorsement competencies). Thus, these scales may be beneficial for professional and clinical psychology training courses in Australia. Post university, these scales may also be useful for the evaluation of internship and clinical registrar training pathways, as well as practitioner self-reflection.  These rating scales will allow psychologists, trainees and supervisors to reflect upon, assess and monitor competence development across the multiple domains of practice, which may then guide professional development and supervision.

We are collecting data to test the psychometric properties of the updated COPPR 2.0, and you, your trainees, supervisor/s and colleagues are invited to utilise these scales for self-reflection and placement/competency review purposes. All psychologists (at any stage of their career/training journey), are also invited to utilise the scales for self-reflection purposes. It is anticipated that the survey, once fully validated, will be freely available for practice, education, research and training purposes.

Practitioners can take a screenshot of their results, which they can then utilise for self-reflection purposes, tracking competency development over time, in supervision and for training/placement review. You, your staff, or your trainees, may complete the survey as often as you like, and in doing so you are able to assess and monitor competence development over time.
