Competencies of Professional Psychology Rating Scales (COPPR)

Dr Kylie Rice (University of New England) and colleagues have developed a new measure to guide psychologists in reflecting on and assessing their competencies. This measure, the Competencies of Professional Psychology Rating scale (COPPR; Rice et al., 2022), is based on the APAC Level 3 competencies and includes both a self-report version for psychologists and trainees to complete on their own competencies, and also an observer version for supervisors to complete for their supervisees. A new clinical subscale has also been added to enable the COPPR to be applied in clinical training pathways (based on APAC Level 4 Clinical endorsement competencies). Thus, these scales may be beneficial for professional and clinical psychology training courses in Australia. Post university, these scales may also useful for the evaluation of internship and clinical registrar training pathways, as well as practitioner self-reflection.  These rating scales will allow psychologists, trainees and supervisors to reflect upon, assess and monitor competence development across the multiple domains of practice, which may then guide professional development and supervision.

We are collecting data to test the psychometric properties of the scales, and you, your trainees, supervisor/s and colleagues are invited to utilise these scales for self-reflection and placement/competency review purposes. All psychologists (at any stage of their career/training journey), are also invited to utilise the scales for self-reflection purposes. It is anticipated that the survey, once fully validated, will be freely available for practice, education, research and training purposes.

Supervisors and trainees are able to download a copy of their results, which they can then utilise in tracking competency development over time, in supervision and for training/placement review.  Practitioners who complete the measure for self-reflection purposes are able to obtain a certificate of completion for CPD purposes. Please select a link below to access the COPPR Scales. You, your staff, or your trainees, may complete the survey as often as you like, and in doing so you are able to assess and monitor competence development over time.

To proceed to the correct version, please select from the following options:

SUPERVISOR / OBSERVER VERSION (to assess a trainee's competence development)

TRAINEE / SUPERVISEE VERSION (to self-assess competence development as part of a training pathway)

PRACTITIONER SELF-REPORT VERSION (for a psychologist in practice to self-reflect on competencies)

The next phase of research will also include collecting qualitative data on the measure. If you would be willing to assist with this, please contact Dr Kylie Rice via email Kylie.Rice@une.edu.au or phone 02 6773 4259.

This project has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of New England (Approval No HE21-182, Valid to 31 December 2024).

Currently these surveys are provided for education, training and practice purposes only. If you would like to utilise the COPPR Scales in research - please contact Dr Kylie Rice by email: Kylie.Rice@une.edu.au Copyright of the scales is retained by Dr Kylie Rice, and the COPPR scales cannot be used or distributed without permission. There are several publications that are in the process of being published by Dr Rice and colleagues.
