HDR Scholarship from a Research Grant

Research grants often include scholarships for HDR candidates, it is important to check the grant guidelines for specific information. The information below is for grant-holders to advertise and select a scholarship recipient(s) as part of a research grant.

A research scholarship from a grant may contain some of the following components:

  • A stipend - covering living costs
  • International tuition fees
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) - It's a condition of international candidates visa that the candidate (and any family member coming to Australia) have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
  • Top-Up Funding - these amounts vary and are used to 'top up' an existing stipend
  • Operational Funding - these amounts can vary, and are funds used to cover the cost of research. This type of funding would generally be managed through the School
  • Fieldwork and travel funding - funds to cover research-related travel and fieldwork costs.

Advertising

Contact must be made with the Graduate Research School to request to advertise a scholarship on the Graduate Research School's HDR Scholarships, Prizes, and Awards webpage. The Graduate Research School will send an advertising template including the following information:

  • The wording for the advertisement
  • The source of funding (e.g is the scholarship RTP, University or externally funded)
  • The amount of funding available
  • Any relevant web links (to the research project or researcher webpages)
  • Time frame for advertising i.e. opening and closing dates (must be advertised for a minimum of three weeks)
  • Time frames for expected commencement of candidature
  • Whether the scholarship is for domestic and/or international students
  • Contact details of a relevant person to provide information to candidate
  • Cost code for the scholarship payments
  • Any additional information that may be required from candidates, not included in the standard UNE application forms.

The advertisement on the GRS webpage will be sent to the grant-holder. We encourage grant-holders to circulate the link with a short introductory email to professional networks of the researchers, and through research and/or professional societies, as well as to colleagues working in the field.

Applications

Scholarship applications must be submitted directly to Graduate Research School via AskUNE. Scholarship applicants are required to submit a Candidature Application Form and supporting documents to be assessed by the school in conjunction with the scholarship application. The Graduate Research School will accept applications during the scholarship opening and closing dates.

Recipient Selection

The grant-holder, or nominee, will organise a panel of suitably qualified UNE staff to assess the applications for the scholarship. The grant-holder, or their nominee, will generally Chair the panel, and will be responsible for ensuring that a record is kept of the selection process that is in keeping with the University’s record keeping standards.

Once the scholarship application closing date has passed, the Graduate Research School will provide electronic copies as well as an overview of all applications received to the Chair.

The Chair of the panel is responsible for ensuring that the process by which candidates are selected is fair and non-discriminatory.

The Panel should be gender balanced and consist of the following:

  • The grant holder or their nominee
  • Higher Degree Research Coordinator
  • An additional UNE employee, preferably a content expert

Once the selection process is complete, the Chair will notify the Graduate Research School of the complete list of outcomes of the selection, including the successful and unsuccessful applicants. In the case of the unsuccessful applicants, the Chair must provide a summary of the reasons the application was not successful.

Administration

Once the Graduate Research School has been notified of the successful and unsuccessful applicants, the Graduate Research School will send the notification letters to all applicants. Please note, a successful scholarship offer will not be issued to an applicant until they have received an offer of admission into an HDR program at UNE.

Once the successful applicant has notified the Graduate Research School in writing of their acceptance,  the Graduate Research School will administer the scholarship payment(s) as stipulated in the scholarship offer letter.
