2023 SACUNE Scholarship recipient

Emily Doran 2023 SACUNE Scholarship recipient, Emily Doran.

Emily Doran

For a decade Emily Doran has worked as a School Support Officer at the Port Augusta Secondary School, where she has developed a strong rapport in the local community to assist disadvantaged students and families in the area, along with fellow staff members.

Education is her passion and Emily’s personal strengths are her determination and aptitude for helping others.  She assists disengaged youth back into education to reach their goals and prepare for future careers. She finds it personally rewarding to see the sense of pride this engenders.

At the end of 2022, Emily’s line manager, the Assistant Principal, asked if she would be interested in working as a special authority teacher.  She decided to give it a go and lodged an application with the Teachers Registration Board.  In December 2022 the Teachers Registration Board granted her special authority to teach in 2023 with the potential for extension, and Emily believes her study outcomes assisted the decision. This affords her the opportunity to work as a teacher within the Youth Engagement Strategy (YES) Centre at the Port Augusta Secondary School where she would like to work on the completion of her degree. The YES Centre is focussed on reengaging students and supporting them to gain their SACE and/or employment.  Emily finds her study challenging and professionally rewarding as she is continuously learning new approaches and is able to put these into practice.

Emily lives in Quorn and leads a busy lifestyle with two young children and is heavily involved in sporting activities with roles such as scoring, umpiring, and coaching. She finds the workload, study and family commitments difficult to manage at times, however, admits that she has survived thus far!  Emily is looking forward to completing her Bachelor of Education (K-12 teaching) and, intends to stay in the local area to assist youth along their educational journey.
