Master of Applied Linguistics (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)

Master of Applied Linguistics will give you the ability to understand the design of language, nuances and context of language and intercultural communication – invaluable skills in an increasingly interconnected world, and especially important when teaching English to speakers of other languages prepares you to become a confident and competent teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

EDLI504

In this unit, you will examine specific knowledge about the English language, including contexts of English language use, text structure, and cohesion, grammar and vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling, and punctuation.

You will learn how to teach explicit knowledge about language in the EAL/D classroom; learning and teaching language skills (listening, speaking, reading/viewing, writing/composing); and EAL/D program planning, design and evaluation.

As part of the unit you will complete a 60-hour supervised professional experience placement. Completion of EDLI502 and EDLI504 is necessary to meet the accreditation standards for most employers, for example, teaching TESOL/EAL-D in Australian schools, in English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) and with providers of the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP).

To fulfill the requirements of the professional experience component of EDLI504, the following four conditions must be met:

  1. 60-hour professional experience placement in an institution that delivers recognised educational programs in English as an additional language (EAL), or equivalent
  2. The placement is completed in a continuous ten (10) day block
  3. A class made up of no less than seven (7) students learning English as an additional language
  4. A minimum grade of Satisfactory is achieved.

Please note that the professional experience component of this unit does not meet the professional experience requirements for registration as a teacher in Australia. In order to be registered as a teacher in Australia, you must enroll in a teacher education course at an Australian university, such as a Bachelor of Education or a Master of Teaching. A successful placement does, however, enable you to add the TESOL – EAL/D curriculum area to existing teaching qualifications.
