Course information
Download course brochurePalaeontology is the study of prehistoric life forms (or fossils) preserved in rocks and ancient sediments and the evolution of life on Earth. It is a multidisciplinary science, involving not only geology but also aspects of biology and chemistry.
The University of New England is one of only a few educational institutions in Australia that offers a coherent undergraduate program of study in palaeontology. Our Undergraduate Certificate in Palaeontology will provide you with foundational knowledge and skills in this fascinating field.
Whether you want to experience a taste for university studies, or you're currently working in the field and want to gain tertiary qualifications to boost your skills, this course is the ideal starting point.
The units neatly combine to form a standalone qualification or a pathway towards diplomas and degrees, diplomas and masters’ awards at UNE.
Why study the Undergraduate Certificate in Palaeontology with UNE?
UNE has a long history of palaeontological teaching and research and is conveniently located in the heart of the New England Fold Belt, providing an excellent natural laboratory for studying diverse and abundant Palaeozoic (542-251-million-year-old) fossils.
What also makes studying palaeontology at UNE unique is we offer our subjects in online mode, allowing you to study from home, no matter where you live in Australia, or indeed, the world.
UNE is also an excellent academic environment for you to conduct palaeontological research at various levels beyond the certificate level, e.g., Bachelor Degree, Honours, Masters and PhD.
Our academic team are highly qualified and respected researchers. Many are well-known for their discoveries that have been publicised on a world stage. Being part of our dynamic learning environment gives you the best possible grounding for your career or further study.
What makes our course different?
This course comes with opportunities to:
- Learn the fundamental principles of palaeontology and be introduced to the history of life on Earth. Explore the origin of life, evolution, extinction and palaeoecology.
- Benefit from facilities for palaeontological research that are second-to-none in Australia. We employ the latest technology, giving our research and our students a competitive edge.
- Through a ‘dinosaur lens’, learn about major transitions in the history of life and their relationship to Earth Systems, such as plate tectonics and environmental changes. Be able to distinguish major groups of dinosaurs and use their anatomy to evaluate dinosaur growth, behaviour and evolution.
- Gain a basic understanding of evolution as interpreted from the fossil record, where you will learn to explain the geological and biological importance of fossils.
- Understand the building blocks of the planet, and the materials that make up Earth's crust and the processes that operate to form these materials.
- Learn about how our planet works, what it is made up of, and why.
- Examine the story of the evolution of life on earth over the last 500 million years from the earliest life forms to the vertebrate invasion of land, the emergence of dinosaurs, and the origin of humans.
- Learn about evolution, discussed in the context of a constantly changing Earth, including major climatic shifts and extinction events.
- Take part in optional laboratory sessions on campus at UNE.
- Learn about basic biological concepts and principles including evolution, diversity of animals and plants, plant structure and function, and ecological principles and applications.
- Gain skills to boost your employability as a graduate, including communication, critical thinking, research and problem-solving.
Study online
Most of our students choose to study online across three study periods with 24/7 tutor support* and fit study around work and family commitments. Uniquely, our online students are mostly over 30 and form a community of adults who share the same challenges and priorities. They bring their life and work experience together at UNE in order to become future-fit and better respond to a rapidly changing world.
* 24/7 tutor support includes: essay feedback (within 24 hours); live chat 24/7 for generic feedback on academic writing; and subject-specific help at a foundation or first-year level for subjects including mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, business, accounting, microeconomics, macroeconomics and statistics. There are also a wide range of workshops, resources and courses available in academic skills support to assist you and help you to succeed.

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
