Chem-Approvals: Mandatory process for acquisition of ALL chemicals at UNE

Anyone acquiring chemicals at UNE must follow the Chemical Acquisition Risk Assessment (CARA) process before purchase or any other acquisition. This applies to all chemical acquisitions across the university without exception.

Before acquiring any chemical, you must:

  1. Complete an online approval form via the Chem Approvals system on the Safety Hub: https://myune.sharepoint.com/sites/ChemApprovals/SitePages/Chemical-Acquisition-Approvals.aspx
  2. Receive approval - You'll be notified via MS Teams when your request is reviewed
  3. Obtain an approval number - You may NOT acquire any chemical without this number

Key Points

  • Designated approvers will assess each request and may escalate for specialist consultation if needed
  • Request outcomes will be: "approved" (with approval number), "denied", or "review" (requiring additional information)
  • This process ensures dialogue between chemical users, storage supervisors, and competent approvers before acquisition

Assistance notes are contained directly in the online approval form (accessed from the link under 1 above).
