UNE offers reduced fees to help with the cost of studying selected degrees online. The UNE International Bursary provides up to a 20% reduction on published annual tuition fees for eligible full-time international students enrolling in a full online degree program.

Most UNE online courses can be completed entirely offshore. However, some courses include units with compulsory Intensive Schools, where you may be required to attend the Armidale campus for a short period (typically 1–2 weeks). These intensives are common in courses with practical components, such as sciences, allied health, social work, and education.

Check your course page to see which units have intensives. If you have concerns about attending campus, contact us before applying—we can discuss your specific situation.

Course content, lectures, tutorials, and unit participation are provided via an online platform called MyLearn. Some courses include units with compulsory Intensive Schools, where you may be required to attend the Armidale campus for a short period of time. These Intensive Schools are typical in courses with important practical components, such as sciences and allied health.

UNE Internationals 'How to Apply' page will direct you to the application portal for your preferred course and study mode. This page has options for both on-campus and online applicants wanting to commence study with UNE.

Please note that UNE cannot give pre-application advice on eligibility; to have your prior studies/qualifications assessed, please complete an application here. It is free to apply.

You can apply for recognition of prior study or experience, which can sometimes be granted as part of a student's admission to the course, and/or can be granted for individual units within the course. More information about how this works here.

Non-Award courses are short, focused study programs (typically 1–2 trimesters) that let you develop specific skills without committing to a full degree. They're perfect for:

  • Working professionals wanting to upskill
  • Students testing UNE before enrolling in a degree
  • Those seeking flexible, affordable learning

Yes, you can progress to a degree. If you complete a non-award course with strong grades, you may be eligible to apply for prior recognition in a related bachelor's or master's degree, potentially reducing your study time by up to 1 year.

As an online student, you have access to:

  • Academic support
  • Library services
  • Student counselling
  • Career services
  • International student support
  • Technology support

All services are accessible online. The International Services team is here to help with any issues or questions.

The academic year at UNE is divided into three trimesters. Many undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs are available for commencing students in either Trimester 1 or 2. Many UNE courses offer a Trimester 3 online intake, giving you greater flexibility to fit your studies around work and life commitments.

  • Trimester 1 February to June
  • Trimester 3 October to February
  • Trimester 2 June to October

As a guide, applications for Trimester 1 (February-June) should be submitted by the end of November of the previous year and applications for Trimester 2 (June-October) should be submitted by the end of May. Late applications will be considered wherever possible.

Yes, many online students work. The flexibility of online study lets you balance work and learning. However, your workload depends on your course intensity—some programs require 20–30 hours per week.

We have online distance education for everyone.

Experience hands-on learning through UNE's flexible intensive schools, combining online study with short campus visits. Our distance research degrees offer world-class supervision and digital collaboration tools, perfect for international scholars pursuing higher degrees.

Intensive Schools
Intensive schools are blocks of time when you are required to attend classes with other students doing your course. They may be a requirement of your distance education program.

Research Degrees by Distance
Degrees and PhDs via distance education with UNE. The benefits of studying via distance education are that students can complete the degree at their own pace, and are able to continue working if they are studying part-time.
