Our Commitment
UNE upholds the right of children and young people to be safe, respected, and engaged within the UNE community.
UNE enforces zero tolerance for any form of exploitation or abuse of children or young people.
UNE is committed to the safety, participation and empowerment of all children and young people.
This includes commitment to:
- The best interests of children and their protection from harm is paramount.
- Child abuse is not tolerated and policies and procedures are put in place to ensure it does not happen.
- Children’s rights are understood and respected.
- Concerns about child safety raised by children and their parents and carers are acted on.
- Reporting abuse is not obstructed or prevented.
UNE welcomes children and young people as part of the University community including as students, dependents of staff, campus visitors, and through the University’s research projects, community engagement and school outreach activities.
Every person connected to the University has a duty of care to our children and young people. It is a shared and collective responsibility of all University staff, students, volunteers, and contractors to foster the safety and prevention of the abuse of children and young people.
UNE provides a child-safe environment, and our organisational structures, policies, procedures and processes promote child safety and wellbeing.
Protecting children and young people
UNE will prevent child abuse or harm, by or through:
- the early identification of risks in the University environment and the removal and reduction of those risks;
- robust human resources and recruitment practices for all staff, which explicitly consider child safety and wellbeing;
- regularly training and educating staff on the risks of child abuse or harm;
- vigorously screening our contractors and third-party partnerships.
All allegations and safety concerns made to and identified by UNE will be treated very seriously and consistently in line with UNE policies and procedures, and will align with the requirements of the Office of the Children’s Guardian.
UNE has policies and procedures to guide and support its leadership team and staff to achieve these commitments to provide a child-safe environment. These include:
The Code of Conduct clearly establishes acceptable and unacceptable behaviours for UNE Representatives.
The Student Behavioural Misconduct Rules clearly establishes acceptable and unacceptable behaviours for UNE students.
We regularly review our practices, policies and procedures to ensure ongoing compliance with the Commonwealth Child Safety Framework and the NSW Office of the Children’s Guardian.
