Calling for Expressions of Interest - SEC

School Education Committees

The Chairs of the following School Education Committees (SEC) are calling for Expressions of Interest (EOI) from students currently enrolled in a course within one of the following Schools who wish to be considered for appointment as a Student Member on the SEC:

  • Business
  • Environmental and Rural Science
  • Health
  • Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS)
  • Law
  • Psychology
  • Rural Medicine
  • Science and Technology (S&T)

EOIs must be received by 5 pm AEDT, Monday 26 October 2026.

About School Education Committees

The SEC’s objectives are to:

  1. approve or make recommendations relating to academic governance of the School's courses and units;
  2. ensure compliance of School's courses and units with legislative, regulatory and policy requirements, including the Higher Education Standards Framework and the Australian Qualifications Framework;
  3. involve students in the governance of the school’s courses and units;
  4. provide quality assurance of the School's curriculum through consideration of course and unit monitoring and review; and
  5. provide advice on matters relating to the School's teaching and learning.

The approval and endorsement functions of the SEC are as follows (and as specified in the Course and Unit Policy except as indicated below):

  1. endorses full proposals (academic case) for new courses;
  2. endorses significant course amendments;
  3. approves minor course amendments;
  4. endorses course review outcomes and re-approval of courses;
  5. endorses teach-out plans for course discontinuation;
  6. approves new units, unit-reapproval and teach out plans for unit discontinuation;
  7. approves unit amendments; and
  8. approves School-based work integrated learning handbooks or guidebooks (Work Integrated Learning Policy).

The monitoring and advisory functions of the SEC are as follows:

  1. monitor the School's courses and units, identifying any issues for consideration and action. Provide an annual summary of course monitoring to Curriculum Committee, and on unit monitoring to Curriculum Committee and Teaching and Learning Committee (Course and Unit Policy);
  2. provide feedback on course and unit reviews (Course and Unit Policy);
  3. monitor and advise on the accreditation process for all professionally accredited courses within the School (Professional Accreditation Procedure);
  4. monitor and advise on any third party arrangements for the delivery of the school’s courses or units (Third Party Provider Arrangements Policy);
  5. monitor the outcomes of Board of Examiners meetings (Terms of Reference – Board of Examiners);
  6. monitor the School’s activities in respect of the Learning and Teaching Plan and Indigenous Education Strategy;
  7. advise Head of School on schedule of units in each academic year (Course and Unit Policy);
  8. advise on UNE’s ATAR adjustment factors (ATAR Procedure);
  9. monitor trends and risks in academic integrity and advise on potential mitigation actions;
  10. provide feedback on University policies relating to teaching and learning.
  11. advise Head of School on administrative processes relating to teaching, learning and assessment matters within the School; and
  12. where relevant, advise members of School on teaching and learning matters discussed and considered by the SEC.

As per the Terms of Reference, the appointments will be made by the SEC Chair in consultation with the Head of School, following an expression of interest process. The term of office of Student Members is 1 year, commencing immediately following appointment, or at the conclusion of the current members' term.

Eligibility

To be eligible for appointment as a Student Member, students must be currently admitted to or enrolled in a UNE course of study, with sufficient time remaining to fulfil a one-year period of office.

Interested students are encouraged to consider whether their study arrangements allow time to participate in the Committee - you will need to make time to prepare for, attend and participate in meetings which occur monthly and usually run for 1-2 hours.

Students may only submit an EOI to join the School Education Committee of the School offering the course in which they are enrolled.

Current members are welcome to submit an EOI, ensuring they have sufficient time remaining for their studies to fulfil the period of office (i.e. 1 year) at the time of appointment.
