Module 6: Conclusion

A non-doctrinal law and policy researcher where a researcher is able to get advice from literature, the internet, or from mentors, supervisors or colleagues, to deal with many other issues I have not tried to address. This includes information about the mechanics of research or writing, or software for tasks like managing research notes or literature, or citing references.

Researchers often face personal challenges, such as maintaining motivation, overcoming ‘writer’s block’ or managing their relationships with collaborators or supervisors. As well as information from literature or the internet, research supervisors or mentors, counsellors or trusted colleagues often are happy to help (within the limits of their capacity).

The University of New England provides access to help or advice. This includes courses on skills for researchers, access to counsellors, advisors and mentors, and supportive colleagues.  The School of Law prides is collegial and supportive, and our staff are generally happy to share their knowledge and experience.

The voices of experience show that research is a personal journey – it can be difficult, frustrating and sometimes lonely. It is also exciting, interesting and rewarding. Non-doctrinal methods provide many ways to better understand law and policy, contributing knowledge and helping to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and fairness of public institutions. There are ample opportunities to be creative, while respecting the core principles of a scientific approach.

The personal keys to success? It is not technique or even knowledge –these can be acquired. Many of the attributes that lead to success are personal. Though innate intelligence may distinguish a brilliant researcher from their peers, researchers do not have to be brilliant to do great research. They do need to be curious, to have integrity and be committed to doing their research as well as possible, and they need to appreciate why a scientific discipline is important to ensure the quality of the research that they do.

The Law School looks forward to collaborating with you on your research journey, and to celebrating your successes.
