Poultry Research and Teaching Unit

Our research covers broiler and layer chicken nutrition, and different strategies to improve production performance and gut health of chickens to facilitate sustainable poultry production and premium animal welfare.

Our academic staff, post-doctoral researchers and higher degree research students work on a diverse range of projects along with industry.

The UNE Poultry Research and Teaching Unit is focused on three main objectives:

  • Nutritional strategies for improving production. Our research aims to improve production performance of broiler chickens and laying hens. These include the optimisation of energy, protein and fibre levels in the feed to meet the optimum growth of the chickens.
  • Finding solutions for maintaining poultry health and productivity in the post antibiotic era, focusing on potential feed additives for replacing antibiotics in chicken meat production.
  • Understanding the mode of action related to gut health using molecular biological approaches including transcriptomics and microbiome approaches to identify potential biomarkers for improved health status of birds.
