Formal categories such as noun, adjective, subject, etc., and functional categories such as tense, evidentiality, or agentivity are essential to grammatical description and analysis.

We will explore data from a range of languages which demonstrates that we cannot assume a priori definitions of such categories, but must re-examine and re-define them on a language-by-language basis.
