Baillieu Myer Postgraduate Scholarship

Background

The Baillieu Myer Scholarship is awarded to a PhD or post-doctoral student in Australian history to fund research travel or other expenses.

Baillieu “Bails” Myer AC, (1926 – 2022) was the only surviving son of the founder of the Myer retailing dynasty, Sidney Myer, and was a well-known businessman, philanthropist, agriculturalist, and patron of the arts. Bails Myer had a long career in retail and commerce through the Myer Emporium, Coles Myer and a range of other companies.

From mustering cattle to tackling ski runs, Bails Myer’s life was distinguished by close involvement with philanthropy, including the formation of the Myer Foundation and, after that, Philanthropy Australia. He was also involved with the Sidney Myer Fund – named after his father – and the Yulgilbar Foundation, the Salvation Army and the Rural Education Program.

Details 

The scholarship is valued at $2,500 per annum and is available for up to two years to a domestic student undertaking a doctoral level degree in the area of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at the University of New England.

Eligibility and Assessment Criteria

The applicant must be an Australian Citizen or permanent resident as defined by the Commonwealth. The applicant must be a new or continuing UNE student in their 1st, 2nd, 3rd year in a Doctor of Philosophy with a preferred area of research in Australian History. They must be enrolled full time on campus.

How to Apply

Applications for the Baillieu Myer Postgraduate Scholarship should be made through the online HDR Award Application Form. Please attach the following documents to the application form and submit to research services:

  • Evidence of Australian citizenship or permanent residency
  • Certified copies of degree transcripts
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • 500-word statement how the Scholarship will assist/support the study
  • Outline of Proposed research/Project
  • Proposed Itinerary (including airfare and costs where appropriate)
  • The names of two confidential references, with at least one an academic staff member at UNE
  • HDR candidates must provide a Statement of Support from their Principal Supervisor.
