Bachelor of Education (K-12)

The Bachelor of Education (K-12) contains 80 days of professional experience in both secondary school and primary school settings with 40 days in each. These placements are embedded in EDIT101, EDLT302, EDSP324 and EDCX302.

All professional experience placements in a school setting must meet the following requirements to be counted for placement. The school must:

  • Assess teacher proficiency against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers;
  • Use NESA approved syllabuses or equivalent Australian syllabuses;

All placements must be in a mainstream classroom unless otherwise specified.

For the secondary components of the course, Teacher Education Students will be required to teach both junior and senior school levels in each placement.

Before undertaking the final placement, all Teacher Education Students in this degree must complete and pass both components of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students.

EDIT101 (PrEx 20 days)

This Placement and Information Technology

This placement is embedded in the unit EDIT101. While the unit content is about learning Information Technology (IT), the placement is not directly related to IT so does not need to be in a computer class. Information Technology is covered in the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers as part of the whole of teaching.


Specific Requirements

This is a 20 day block placement in a primary school setting where the pre-service teacher will be assessed against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

EDIT101 Specific Requirements


Placements that can be accepted

  • Mainstream primary classrooms

Placements that cannot be accepted

  • Work in a tutoring agency
  • Work as an au pair
  • Employment as a governess (or equivalent position)
  • Employment as teacher's aide (or equivalent position such as a Learning Support Officer).
  • Release from Face-to-Face (RFF) placements
  • Library Placements
  • Distance Education settings
  • Special Education settings

Due to the shorter nature of the combined experiences in the primary and secondary settings, variations to the placements will not usually be granted.

Changes to EDIT101

From 2025 EDIT101 will no longer be offered,  and to accommodate this change for students the follow units are now offered.

Replacement Theory content Unit  -  EDIT124

Replacement Placement content Unit - PREX201 (20 days)

  • Students are not required to be enrolled in EDIT124 at the same time as being enrolled as the placement. They can do EDIT124 before, after or alongside of PREX201.
  • PREX201 is now their 1st In-School Primary placement.
  • Students complete the placement as per the same Specific Requirements that were required of EDIT101 for their respective degree.

EDLT302 (PrEx 20 days)

This Placement and Planning for Effective Learning

This placement is embedded in the unit EDLT302. The unit content is about Planning for Effective Learning, while the placement incorporates what is taught as part of the whole of teaching as described in the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.


Specific Requirements

This is a 20 day block placement in a primary school setting where the pre-service teacher will be assessed against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

EDLT302 Specific Requirements


Placements that can be accepted

  • Mainstream primary classrooms

Placements that cannot be accepted

  • Work in a tutoring agency
  • Work as an au pair

  • Employment as teacher's aide (or equivalent position such as a Learning Support Officer).

EDSP324 (PrEx 20 days)

This Placement and Classroom Behaviour Management

This placement is embedded in the unit EDSP324. While the unit content is about classroom behaviour management, the placement is not directly related to the unit so does not have to be completed in a Special Education setting or behaviour class. Classroom and behaviour management is part of the whole of teaching and is covered in the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.


Specific Requirements

This is a 20 day block placement in a secondary school setting where the pre-service teacher will be assessed against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. The pre-service teacher will be responsible for a minimum of 12 hours* of teaching per week in their curriculum area(s) of study.

*Depending upon timetables of the school, the pre-service teacher may have to adjust this to accommodate.

EDSP324 Specific Requirements


Placements that can be accepted

  • Mainstream secondary school classrooms in the pre-service teacher's curriculum area(s) of study.

Placements that cannot be accepted

  • Placement in a primary school classroom
  • Placement solely in an area not being studied by the pre-service teacher
  • Work in a tutoring agency
  • Work as an au pair
  • Employment as a governess (or equivalent position)
  • Employment as teacher's aide (or equivalent position such as a Learning Support Officer).
  • Distance Education settings
  • Special Education settings

A Placement in a Distance Education setting may be acceptable in EDIT101 or EDLT302 as long as it meets the requirements of the pre-service teacher's curriculum methods() of study. Acceptability will need to be assessed by the Office for Professional Learning.

EDCX302 (PrEx 20 days)

This Placement and Aboriginal Education

This placement is embedded in the unit EDCX302. It is not a requirement of the placement to be completed in a setting with a specific ratio of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students. Cultural perspectives and understanding, differentiation of curriculum, disability support strategies and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education strategies are included in the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.


Specific Requirements

This placement must be completed in a 20 day block in a secondary school setting where the pre-service teacher will be assessed against all of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. The pre-service teacher will be responsible for a minimum of 14 hours* of teaching per week in their curriculum area(s) of study.

*Depending upon timetables of the school, the pre-service teacher may have to adjust this to accommodate.

EDCX302 Specific Requirements


Graduate Level Placements

This is the final placement where the pre-service teacher is assessed against all of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Level as per the requirements of BOSTES.


Placements that can be accepted

  • Mainstream secondary school classrooms in the pre-service teacher's curriculum area(s) of study.

Placements that cannot be accepted

  • Placement in a primary school classroom
  • Placement solely in an area not being studied by the pre-service teacher
  • Any placement type that varies from a mainstream classroom setting

A Placement in a Distance Education setting may be acceptable in EDIT101 or EDLT302 as long as it meets the requirements of the pre-service teacher's curriculum methods of study. Acceptability will need to be assessed by the Office for Professional Learning.

Changes to EDCX302

From 2025 EDXC302  will no longer be offered,  and to accommodate this change for students the follow units are now offered.

Replacement Theory content Unit  -  EDCX313

Replacement Placement content Unit - PREX304 (20 days)

  • Students are not required to be enrolled in EDCX313 at the same time as being enrolled in the grad prac. They can do EDCX313 before, after or alongside of PREX304.
  • PREX304 is now their Graduate Placement and they are expected to complete LANTITE prior to this, just as they would have been for EDCX302.
  • PREX304 is where they also complete their GTPA. Students complete the placement as per the same Specific Requirements that were required of EDCX302 for their respective degree
