This unit introduces you to the fundamental principles of international environmental law and examines critical issues in the area at the global level.
With an emphasis on building your critical thinking and legal reasoning skills, the unit illustrates fundamental principles and specific regulatory regimes, spanning from water to biodiversity and climate change.
The main emphasis is on international environmental law and policy and national implications.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of the underlying principles and historical development of international environmental law such as the importance of implementing international environmental law at a domestic level and the impact on natural resources management;
- analyse contemporary issues in international environmental law using professional judgement, evaluation and synthesis to consider the impact and effectiveness of international environmental law on political and societal outcomes;
- identify, analyse and critically reflect on complex issues relating to international environmental law to build a persuasive and comprehensive legal argument, including recommendations for appropriate actions and remedies in relation to international environmental law; and
- use judgement and research skills to produce clear and coherent communications that are based on analysis, synthesis and research skills to advise interested parties on international environmental law using legal reasoning and argument.
