Unit information
Explore the personal factors, environmental factors and system fragmentation in health care that contribute to patient complexity. Studying this unit, you will investigate the role of nursing in identifying complex patients to ensure optimal care is provided.
This unit consolidates your knowledge and skills for clinical practice and explores the interplay between nursing, social care and healthcare systems.
You will critique the ways in which nurses, individually and collectively, can enhance practice at the point of care, influence the health and social care system, and contribute to improved patient experience and outcomes.
With opportunities to extend your clinical reasoning and critical thinking skills, you will also examine frameworks and strategies for quality improvement and reinforce your understanding of the interrelationship between health informatics, policy reform and nursing research.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- use clinical reasoning and critical thinking to extend your ability to respond appropriately, safely and effectively to complex care needs;
- analyse indicators of patient experience and outcomes to identify areas where nurses and nursing can enhance these for individuals, communities and populations; and
- critically evaluate strategies for nurses to improve practice at the point of care and influence the broader health system.
