Unit information
This unit builds upon the foundational strategies and skills developed across the first-year units in MSW-PQ that develop their Social Work identity. Through engagement in a synchronous, face-to-face, compulsory intensive school, the unit will provide students with an understanding of, and the opportunity to practise and demonstrate effective communication, teamwork, problem solving and critical thinking skills through a Social Work lens. Students will also develop awareness of their role as a social worker within interdisciplinary teams and in the broader community.
The unit will provide students with the opportunity to deepen their understand about communication, teamwork, problem solving and critical thinking within a Social Work lens. This unit will incorporate key aspects of the literature on structural social work, exploring an ecological systems theory approach. During this unit, students will demonstrate the micro, macro and meso impacts of social work practice, and understand how disadvantage and service provision are interconnected.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- articulate an understanding of the role and function of Social Work practice in Australia;
- apply technical and theoretical knowledge and concepts in Social Work practice in the community;
- demonstrate through face-to-face simulation activities the use of ecological systems theory and its application in practice to Social Work;
- identify structural social work theory; and
- practice how social determinants of health, disadvantage, health and social inequality contribute to service delivery engagement; and
- demonstrate ethical approach strategies used in Social Work practice in a community-setting.
