As an aspiring teacher in Social Science Education, the teaching of Society and the Environment provides you with a grounding for superior subject knowledge and a solid understanding of student-centred strategies that address contemporary society and the environment.

In this unit you will explore the NSW curriculum as it pertains to Studies of Society and the Environment and the Life Skills curriculum and develop teaching strategies which are consistent with values education in junior and senior secondary school Society and Environment curriculum. You will learn how to use and integrate literacy, numeracy and ICT teaching strategies into your practice and learn the aims, objectives, outcomes, course requirements and key terms of the syllabuses.

This unit will teach you how to develop effective, inquiry-based learning sequences for your students which incorporate appropriate assessment strategies.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the nature and purpose of society and environment curriculum in the secondary school and the Life Skills Curriculum (GTSD 1.6.1, 2.1.1);
  2. demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of syllabus requirements in society and environment subjects in the secondary school, including aims, objectives, outcomes, content, course requirements and key terms (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.4.1, 3.1.1);
  3. explain the role of values education in society and environment curriculum and demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the relevant teaching strategies (GTSD 2.1.1, 3.3.1, 5.1.1, 5.2.1, 5.3.1, 5.4.1);
  4. organise the content of society and environment curriculum for secondary school students into an effective inquiry learning sequence which makes use of ICT and incorporates appropriate assessment strategies (GTSD 1.2.1, 1.3.1, 1.5.1, 1.6.1, 2.2.1, 2.3.1, 2.6.1, 3.2.1, 3.4.1, 3.5.1, 3.6.1, 4.2.1, 5.1.1); and
  5. know and understand literacy and numeracy teaching strategies and their application in teaching Society and Environment (GTSD 2.5.1, 3.3.1).
