UNE student studies on a laptop on her lounge at home

As a preservice teacher, your focus in studying this unit will be to build a foundation for teaching science education in years 7 to 10. You will hone your skills to confidently create inspiring and effective learning environments.

Addressing the role and structure of the NSW junior science syllabus, you will develop your understanding of the theories underpinning this specialisation.

Studying this unit, you will develop lesson sequences that incorporate constructivist approaches and examine the role of assessment in informing educational activities.

You will explore occupational health and safety issues associated with the science laboratory and/or outdoor contexts such as the school farm, as well as classroom management strategies important for science education.

By exploring a range of resources, including ICT, you will identify ways to engage students in their learning.

Studying online

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*

Why study with us?

Graduate and mother Claire Haiek at work as a parenting producer at kidspot.com.au

I'm grateful to UNE for the opportunities studying has given me, but above all, for making me realise I could actually do it, and giving me a sense of accomplishment.
