Building on your skills in teaching science education in years 7 to 10 developed in EDSE361, you will learn about compulsory components of secondary science with a focus on the NSW 7-10 science syllabus for the Australian curriculum.

Study this unit to hone your professional skills, examine the nature of science and its relevance to modern society, and deepen your understanding of science education.

You will explore strategies for selecting appropriate approaches and methods of teaching junior secondary science units in a range of scenarios. You will analyse ways to use summative and formative assessment tasks to inform and develop individualised learning. You will also investigate the role of mathematics and literacy in science education and how they can be integrated into learning strategies.

Throughout the unit, you will hone your communication skills to keep students and parents/caregivers informed of the student’s progress.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, substance and structure of the content and teaching strategies of the 7–10 science syllabus by incorporating practical activities into the laboratory so that students are actively engaged in learning (GTSD 2.1.1);
  2. organise content into an effective learning and teaching sequence within the context of the 7–10 syllabus in logical, sequential and structured ways utilising appropriate pedagogy to address student learning outcomes (GTSD 2.2.1, 2.3.1);
  3. plan lesson sequences using knowledge of student learning, content and effective teaching strategies by recognising links in teaching sequences which will develop conceptual understanding and scientific skills and clearly articulate the learning goals (GTSD 3.2.1);
  4. demonstrate broad knowledge of strategies that can be used to evaluate teaching programs to improve student learning by planning and documenting an assessment task which includes a range of embedded strategies for assessing student achievement and appropriately mapping outcomes to these strategies (GTSD 3.6.1, 5.3.1, 5.3.2);
  5. demonstrate knowledge of teaching strategies, including literacy and Numeracy development, that are responsive to the learning strengths and needs of students from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds (GTSD 1.3.1, 1.4.1, 2.4.1, 2.5.1); and
  6. understand the rationale for continued professional learning, and relevant sources of professional learning including external professionals and community representatives, that can be used to improve personal development and student learning (GTSD 5.3.2, 5.4.1, 6.2.1, 6.4.1, 7.4.1).
