This unit can be studied concurrently with EDRM501. It is designed to develop a deep and broad understanding of the theories, principles, strategies and skills you require to undertake research.

Apply what you learn in EDRM501 to the practical aspects in EDRM502, where you will design a comprehensive Research Proposal for a hypothetical research project on a topic of your choice.

You will develop your knowledge of the principles for conducting research among humans and practice how to develop a real ethics application for your proposed research. You will be guided across the different elements of the research process and learn how to write a higher degree thesis. You will gain a nuanced understanding of how to design and implement a research project in an ethical manner.

This unit will prepare you for engaging in research towards a higher degree such as a Master of Education, Doctor of Education or a Doctor of Philosophy.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. apply the theories, principles, strategies and skills at an advanced level to write a Research Proposal and a Higher Degree Research Thesis;
  2. demonstrate and apply an understanding of the different elements of the Research Process;
  3. evaluate, critique and justify application of a named research methodology, paradigm, and methods appropriate to their research interests; and
  4. develop a comprehensive Research Proposal with the essential elements, including topic articulation, problem statement, literature review, theoretical framework, paradigm, methodology, methods, instrumentation, data analysis, interpretation and reporting, for a particular research project.
