Unit information
Develop the basic skills of psychological practice and counselling, together with knowledge of professional standards and ethics by studying this unit.
Whether you choose the online or on campus mode of study for this unit, you will learn mainly online and participate in a mandatory online intensive school containing lectures, seminars, and role-playing activities.

This is one of four units that make up the coursework component of UNE's APAC-accredited Psychology Honours program and is worth 12.5% of the overall Honours grade.
Online students may access on campus facilities, including laboratories. Please contact the Unit Coordinator to make arrangements if necessary.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate appropriate interpersonal communication and counselling skills in situations appropriate to psychological practice and research;
- understand the role of different counselling and interviewing skills and evaluate their application in different settings;
- explain how basic psychological intervention strategies can be applied across a range of contexts and cultures;
- demonstrate an understanding of professional standards and ethics; and
- understand the importance of cultural responsiveness when counselling clients who are members of different cultures.
