Unit information

UNE student studies on a laptop on her lounge at home

Building on your substantial teaching experience, this unit (Professional Experience 4) allows you to complete an additional 20-day teaching placement in a mainstream school.

In this practical unit, you will participate in school-based activities including assuming most tasks and duties normally performed by teachers in the classroom and school.

You will have opportunities to combine your substantial practical education experience with the increasing depth of theoretical knowledge you are building in your other university units.

Through observation, reflection and discussion, and in taking responsibility for more extended teaching activities, you will attain a significant understanding of teaching practice.

Throughout your placement, support will be available from university staff to assist with your needs. You are encouraged to stay in touch with peers to share your experiences to help make the placement the best it can be.

Please see the Office for Professional Learning Important Information webpage for more information.

Placements are completed during dates designated by schools and published by The Office for Professional Learning on the OPL's Moodle PREXUS site.

Students in Initial Teacher Education (ITE) courses must pass the National Literacy and Numeracy Tests prior to commencing the final PrEx placement. This is not required for students in the BEdInServConv.

Students enrolling in Trimester 3 must be aware proposed placement settings may be unavailable at this time of the year (finish/commencement of school years). Students must apply for a Special Extension of Time (SET) if a suitable setting is unavailable, allowing for the placement to be undertaken at a later date.

Studying online

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*

Why study with us?

Graduate and mother Claire Haiek at work as a parenting producer at kidspot.com.au

I'm grateful to UNE for the opportunities studying has given me, but above all, for making me realise I could actually do it, and giving me a sense of accomplishment.
