Teacher understanding of language, literature and literacy is fundamental for developing in students the skills necessary to use the English language effectively throughout the primary school years.

This unit offers you a sound introduction to planning and programming lessons that are suitable for teaching students from diverse backgrounds with a range of abilities and learning needs.

Study this unit for the opportunity to develop your knowledge about text, grammar, word and image relevant to teaching reading, viewing, writing and creating different types of texts. You will also learn how to design learning and teaching sequences and create lesson plans which link to your knowledge of curriculum content. Assessment and reporting strategies will also be covered.

Your knowledge and skills will reflect the Australian Curriculum: English and the NSW English K-10 Syllabus and support materials.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research into how students learn to read and write and the implications for teaching students from diverse backgrounds with varying abilities (GTSD 1.2.1, 1.3.1, 1.4.1, 1.5.1);
  2. demonstrate knowledge about text, grammar, word and image relevant to teaching reading, viewing, writing and creating different types of texts in the Australian Curriculum: English and/or the NSW English K-10 Syllabus (GTSD 2.1.1);
  3. demonstrate knowledge of literacy and numeracy teaching strategies, and their application in teaching reading, viewing, writing and creating in English (GTSD 2.5.1);
  4. apply an understanding of a range of assessment strategies to analyse student learning needs and progress against curriculum achievement standards and/or syllabus outcomes for reading, viewing, writing and creating (GTSD 5.1.1);
  5. evaluate and select appropriate resources to support students' reading, viewing, writing and multimodal text composition (GTSD 3.4.1); and
  6. plan and design learning and teaching sequences and lesson plans, using knowledge of curriculum content, assessment and reporting, student learning and effective strategies for teaching reading, viewing, writing and creating in English (GTSD 2.3.1, 3.1.1, 3.2.1).
