Unit information
Australia’s poultry industry is a significant contributor to the economy, particularly in rural and regional areas. Ensure that you are equipped to thrive in this growing area with the skills and knowledge of poultry production.
Studying this unit, you will develop in-depth understanding of key scientific and production principles in the poultry meat and egg industry, including genetics, management, anatomy and physiology, health and product quality.
In this unit you will also gain knowledge about how the industry is structured, contemporary management processes, housing and environmental requirements and breeding systems. This unit will provide you with the background and skills to problem solve in response to the complex challenges you may encounter in this industry.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of the management processes in poultry production;
- discuss the nutritional requirements for both egg and meat producing birds and be able to read, understand and present information from primary literature on this subject; thereby demonstrating the ability to analyse critically, reflect on and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories which can then be communicated to others using verbal or written forms;
- demonstrate an advanced and integrated appreciation of the housing and environmental requirements of poultry and be able to read, understand and present information from primary literature on this subject to specialist and non-specialist audiences;
- demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of the breeding systems used in poultry production together with a working knowledge of the genetics involved;
- demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of one major aspect of poultry production in consultation with the unit coordinator; and
- demonstrate the ability to undertake research on an aspect of the subject and thereby show autonomy, expert judgment and the ability to apply established theories to a body of knowledge or practice.
