Unit information

Rapid innovation in the development of novel treatments means that a clear understanding of pharmacokinetics is essential. This field examines the impact that the body has on the drug, from administration through to elimination.

Studying this unit, you will explore the core concepts of pharmacokinetics, with opportunities to apply your knowledge in simulated clinical scenarios.

Topics covered examine the fundamental principles of pharmacokinetics, including factors that influence absorption, distribution and elimination of drugs, exposure and response to single and multiple drug doses, therapeutic windows, constant-rate regimens, metabolite kinetics, non-linear pharmacokinetics, bioequivalence and bioavailability, and drug interactions.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. define and describe the core principles of pharmacokinetics, the pharmacokinetic parameters that arise from these principles and the circumstances to which they apply;
  2. utilise pharmacokinetic equations to solve for parameters associated with simulated clinical scenarios;
  3. define and describe the impact of disease/disorder status and genetics on the pharmacokinetics of drug use; and
  4. define and describe the role of surrogate endpoints, biomarker and safety biomarker monitoring in the therapeutic use of drugs.

Studying online

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*

Why study with us?

Graduate and mother Claire Haiek at work as a parenting producer at kidspot.com.au

I'm grateful to UNE for the opportunities studying has given me, but above all, for making me realise I could actually do it, and giving me a sense of accomplishment.
