Unit information
Build a foundation of the scientific knowledge underpinning successful pharmaceutical practice.
Studying this unit through a combination of theory and practical lessons, you will gain a well-rounded understanding of pharmaceutical science. Focusing on the factors influencing routes of drug administration, topics include using the physiology of membranes to predict drug absorption, calculations relevant to pharmaceutical science, technical aspects of compounding and dosage form design.
You will also explore the physicochemical principles of tablets, capsules, solutions and controlled release technologies to gain an understanding of the design of formulations for effective medicine manufacture and drug delivery.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- describe concepts used in pharmaceutics in an appropriate scientific written style;
- demonstrate a broad understanding of the fundamental physico-chemical principles of solid drugs and solutions;
- demonstrate an understanding of the technical performance of selected unit operations performed in the manufacture of drugs including filtration, centrifugation and drying;
- use their knowledge of the physiology of body surfaces to predict whether drugs will be absorbed;
- use their knowledge of pharmaceutics to choose formulations for optimal oral, vaginal, transdermal and rectal delivery;
- demonstrate a thorough understanding of the basic concepts, the formulation and characteristics of tablets and capsules; and
- perform calculations relevant to pharmaceutical science such as dose and mass calculations in formulation and solution.
