Extend your capacity for independent, lifelong learning and demonstrate that you have an advanced capacity for complex problem solving that can meet the needs of stakeholders in a rapidly changing world.

This unit is a component of your information technology capstone, offering you an opportunity to work as part of a team to implement a substantial a real-world software-based system based on a given specification.

With projects taken from diverse sources, including academic linkages, community organisations and industry, you will be exposed to the development and testing stages of the software development lifecycle, with a focus on constructing a software solution, developing appropriate documentation and evaluating the effectiveness of the implementation.

Consolidating your knowledge and technical skills, you will be expected to utilise project management tools and version repositories and apply modern software development methodology.

48cps including COSC220; or candidature in the MInfoTech [Rule (b) or (c)]; or MCompSc Rule (b); or candidature in MArtInt and 48cps

Notes

Some projects cannot be undertaken off campus. Advanced Standing cannot be granted for this unit.

 

COSC595 requires a knowledge of, and programming experience with, a high level programming language.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. analyse requirements, critically evaluate options, conduct research to implement a substantial piece of software for clients and other stakeholders;
  2. apply knowledge and skills to develop a significant software solution to high standard within established deadlines;
  3. communicate effectively with clients/stakeholders to refine requirements and to manage client expectations over the course of a project;
  4. apply a relevant planning strategy to a software development project using appropriate tools and methods; and
  5. participate as a member or leader of diverse teams within a multi-level, multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural setting to bring a project to successful completion.
