Unit information
The Humanities and the Social Sciences are important areas of study for primary school students. This unit will give you a valuable foundation in student-centred pedagogies of the teaching of the humanities curriculum so that you can start your career as an effective and engaging teacher.
In this unit you will examine the NSW History K-10 Syllabus and the Australian Curriculum for Humanities and Social Sciences and learn to identify and access appropriate resources to successfully teach history in the primary classroom. You will develop an awareness of the safe, responsible and ethical use of these materials for students in the primary years.
You will learn how to design learning sequences that cater for the diverse needs of your students and create student-centred teaching strategies aiming to improve your students’ academic outcomes.

This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the range of academic disciplines related to the humanities and social sciences and their place in contemporary primary school curriculum (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.4.1);
- demonstrate knowledge of research-based pedagogies and associated learning principles in current humanities and social science syllabuses, with emphasis on pedagogies for developing knowledge and understanding and skills of acquiring information (GTSD 1.2.1);
- design student-centred learning sequences and lessons that meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities with clear goals, outcomes, questioning strategies and assessment links for humanities and social science learning (GTSD 1.5.1, 2.1.1, 2.2.1, 2.3.1, 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 3.3.1,3.5.1 5.1.1);
- employ the literacy, numeracy and digital literacy skills relevant to learning in the humanities learning areas including those mediated through ICT technologies (GTSD 2.5.1, 2.6.1); and
- identify, locate and use a variety of appropriate content information resources and educational providers that support the teaching of humanities and social sciences in the primary years and develop an awareness of the safe, responsible and ethical use of such resources (GTSD 3.4.1, 4.5.1, 7.2.1).
