Unit information
If you’re considering working in the cultural heritage industry at any level, an understanding of the philosophy, practice and current state of conserving the cultural heritage of Australia's built environment is essential.
Whether you have an interest in becoming a cultural resource manager or a historic house volunteer, this unit encourages greater awareness of heritage issues and controversies and provides you with new research skills to analyse and evaluate the worth of heritage items in your communities.
You will critically examine fundamental concepts in heritage, which helps you to develop an advanced knowledge of heritage conservation philosophy and practice. Specifically, you will analyse built heritage both in terms of planning for its conservation and for its interpretation/exhibition, as well as assessing cultural significance.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the cultural significance of Australia's built heritage;
- critically analyse and evaluate the cultural significance of Australia's built heritage;
- apply advanced knowledge and skills to plan for the conservation and interpretation of built heritage in keeping with best industry practice, including the draft of stage one of a conservation management plan as well as a statement of cultural significance;
- demonstrate advanced knowledge of, and apply, current industry philosophy and practices in conserving the built environment;
- research and evaluate issues and legislation in heritage conservation in Australia, and present clear and coherent exposition of knowledge and ideas; and
- exercise critical thinking and judgement to identify, access and evaluate appropriate sources of information and analysis.
