Unit information
To meet the fundamental care needs of patients in dynamic healthcare settings, your practical skills and your ability to communicate effectively with diverse colleagues, patients and their families are of critical importance.
This unit offers an opportunity to build professional relationships through hands-on experience, as you undertake 80 hours of clinical placement. A range of individual and collaborative learning experiences will help you to reflect on your performance throughout the unit.
During your placement you will develop valuable knowledge and translate this into practice. Focusing on practice skills relating to health and physical assessment, you will obtain real-life health information. This will include taking vital signs, blood glucose levels and urinalysis, and documenting your findings.
Integrating your knowledge and skills in safe manual handling, you will also work to enhance patient safety through activities of daily living.

This unit includes 80 hours of professional experience placement.
Professional experience placements will only proceed for students who meet pre-clinical requirements in the first eight weeks of their enrolment in the course and maintain the currency of these requirements throughout the duration of the course.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- establish and maintain a professional relationship with patients, families and others in laboratory and clinical settings;
- demonstrate ability to meet the hygiene, nutrition and elimination, mobility and comfort needs of patients with varying degrees of dependence safely and within scope of practice;
- obtain a basic health history and conduct a general physical assessment demonstrating ability to take vital signs, blood glucose levels, urinalysis, and height and weight measurement, waist circumference and to document findings appropriately;
- interpret health information from health assessment and identify and report abnormal findings to others within legal, ethical and scope of practice requirements; and
- reflect on their performance in individual and collaborative learning experiences.
