Unit information

UNE student studies on a laptop on her lounge at home

Functional musculoskeletal anatomy is the study of how the neuro-musculoskeletal structures of the human body function.

This unit provides you with a broad introduction to this area of human anatomy and equips you with the background knowledge you need to study biomechanics at a more advanced level in future.

You will explore topics such as the structure and function of musculoskeletal tissues and the basic elements of motor control and sensory feedback. You will investigate the functional anatomy of the upper and lower limbs, the vertebral column and the head and neck.

By examining posture and locomotion, you will develop an understanding of integrated musculoskeletal function.

You will also briefly review the functional anatomy of adaptation due to growth and development, injury and disuse, and in response to exercise.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. locate and identify components of the neuromusculoskeletal system of the human body and appropriately describe the role of these to peers and future clients;
  2. identify foundation kinesiological principles, and the terminology commonly used to describe them, and use these to analyse individual joint complexes and their independent and composite functions in posture and movement analysis in exercise;
  3. develop a broad understanding of the effects of growth and development, exercise, immobilisation and injury and evaluate these in relation to the neuromusculoskeletal system;
  4. consolidate an understanding of anatomical tissues and describe how various movement contexts might influence their function;
  5. demonstrate knowledge of body proportions and apply this to sport performance; and
  6. identify muscles that are active in producing and controlling a movement at a particular joint and analyse their roles.

Studying online

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*

Why study with us?

Graduate and mother Claire Haiek at work as a parenting producer at kidspot.com.au

I'm grateful to UNE for the opportunities studying has given me, but above all, for making me realise I could actually do it, and giving me a sense of accomplishment.
