There is an ever-increasing need for practitioners and clinicians with high-level skills in addressing behaviour that challenges and limits positive engagement in clients with disorders and disabilities. This unit focuses on person-centred models and frameworks to build your understanding of the functional and biomedical factors that can prevent clients with disorders and disabilities from achieving their personal goals and aspirations. 

Emphasising the scientific and functional assessment procedures for overcoming the barriers to functioning via skill-building and environmental management, the unit explores common clinical, educational, community and employment contexts, equipping you for practice in diverse settings. 

As well as the biological and physiological bases for these frameworks and models, you will learn about how these can be used to develop and plan functionally oriented behavioural approaches for assisting people with disorder and disability.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. apply advanced theoretical knowledge to describe and discuss the models and frameworks for identifying barriers to functioning in people with disorders and disabilities;
  2. identify and critically analyse the relationship between underlying genetic and physiological cause and barriers to functioning;
  3. apply advanced knowledge and skills to identify and critically discuss the impact of disorder and disability upon daily functioning;
  4. critically analyse and review literature to present complex and coherent arguments regarding development and planning of biomedical strategies for assisting people with a disorder or a disability; and
  5. exercise critical thinking and advanced judgement in responding to and solving problems in relation to the biomedical and functional aspects of people with a disorder or a disability.
