This unit explores children’s family contexts with an emphasis on the unique strengths and features of Indigenous families. In current contexts of social change, the unit will help you gain a broader understanding of the issues facing families and early childhood professionals. As well as learning how to advocate for families and link them to services and resources to promote resilience. You will also learn how to recognise and respect their differences and strengths. As part of this unit, you will research theoretical and practical approaches for relating to families that are both diverse and dynamic. This unit emphasises communication and relationship strategies, as well as personal and professional values and understandings, based on a strengths-based, resilience perspective.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. discuss the strengths and diversity of Indigenous families and communities and the unique challenges they face (CS: 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 6.4);
  2. reflect on the diverse factors impacting Australian families within communities and demonstrates ways to strengthen protective factors and use trauma-informed support to build child and family resilience (CS: 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 5.2, 6.1);
  3. articulate ways in which educators can respect the diversity of contexts, experiences and practices within families (CS: 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 5.2, 6.1, 6.4); and
  4. demonstrate a range of skills to support, resource and advocate for families within communities as part of the roles and responsibilities of educators (CS: 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 5.2, 6.1, 6.4).
