Unit information
This unit explores key institutional and substantive aspects of European Union (EU) law and aims to build your critical thinking and legal reasoning skills.
The first component focuses on institutional issues, including the historical development of European integration, EU law sources, EU institutions and their power, law-making procedures and enforcement mechanisms.
The second component examines substantive issues, specifically the basic principles of EU law, free movement of goods, capitals, workers and services, as well as human rights.
Throughout, close attention is paid to the external relations of the Union through a comparative approach.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a command and coherent understanding of the scope and function of EU law and its institutions;
- use initiative and judgement to critically reflect on the foundations of EU law and its concepts; critically analyse how EU law both interacts with and affects national legal systems; and critically assess the theories e.g., the social, economic and political theories, that influence the developments in EU law;
- use initiative and judgement to identify and critically analyse, synthesise, and consolidate a persuasive and coherent legal argument that applies EU law concepts and principles to complex fact situations; and
- demonstrate a well-developed ability to act independently to present a clear and coherent exposition of the relevant knowledge that evidences legal research, legal reasoning and professional judgment to questions relating to EU law matters.
