Unit information
The unit presents theoretical perspectives on children’s language and literacy learning and development (including print, visual and multimodal literacy) before and during the school years. You will examine the use of print, multimodal and digital texts in the classroom, with an emphasis on children’s literature, and they analyse these texts for their language and visual resources.
You will be introduced to planning for diversity (e.g., linguistic, social, gender) in the classroom, and develop systematic strategies for teaching speaking and listening; reading and viewing; and writing.
You will use your theoretical understandings to evaluate classroom resources, and they design elements of a classroom language and literacy program with reference to the Australian Curriculum: English, and the NSW English K–10 Syllabus.

Good Universities Guide 2024Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
