Unit information

Studying this unit, you will develop key skills to apply Information and Communications Technology (ICT) across the curriculum and monitor progress.

You will explore content and skills detailed in the National Program Standards for Initial Teacher Education ICT Priority Area, NSW Supplementary Documentation: Elaborations in Priority Areas, and NESA Report Digital Literacy Skills and Learning. You will also examine the Digital Technologies Curriculum and ICT General Capabilities, as prescribed by the Australian Curriculum.

Analysing theories (SAMR and TPACK), you will learn to implement ICT in education, using safe, ethical and socially responsible strategies.

You will explore programming and computational thinking and investigate adaptive technology for improving learning outcomes.

Working with your peers, you will hone your collaboration and critical thinking skills.

This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research and apply theoretical concepts into how students learn and the implications for teaching (GTSD 1.2.1);
  2. analyse, plan, design, implement and evaluate teaching strategies for using Digital Literacy and Technologies to expand curriculum learning opportunities for students including the use of ICT in the provision of timely and appropriate feedback to students about their learning (GTSD 2.6.1, 3.6.1, 5.2.1);
  3. demonstrate knowledge of a range of resources, including Digital Literacy and Technologies, that engage students in their learning and support teacher professional learning (GTSD 3.4.1, 6.2.1, 6.4.1);
  4. demonstrate an understanding of Digital Literacy and Technologies-based assessment strategies including informal and formal, diagnostic, formative and summative approaches to assess student learning (GTSD 5.1.1);
  5. demonstrate an understanding of the role ICT plays in reporting to students and parents/caregivers and in the keeping of accurate and reliable records of student achievement (GTSD 5.5.1, 7.3.1); and
  6. demonstrate an understanding of school and legislative requirements including knowledge of the Disability Standards for Education to support the safe, responsible and ethical use of Digital Literacy and Technologies in the maintenance of student well-being and safety (GTSD 1.6.1, 4.4.1, 4.5.1, 7.1.1).
