Unit information
In an era of global turbulence there is an increasing need for compassionate counselling professionals, skilled in working with people who have experienced trauma.
This unit gives you specific knowledge for trauma counselling – the fastest growing area in the counselling field.
You will explore the potential impact of diverse types of traumatic experiences on individuals, families and communities and those who support them, building your understanding of emerging and relevant ways of working with trauma.
You will also examine the issue of resilience in the face of adversity, learn strategies to support people to develop resilience, address suicide risk assessment and management, and learn how to identify and minimise the risk to counsellors of vicarious traumatisation.
Develop knowledge of a range of theoretical perspectives that inform best practice trauma work and be ready to respond competently and compassionately to clients who have experienced trauma.

Good Universities Guide 2024Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
