Further refine your skills and capacity for professional practice and research, with this external clinical placement unit.

Undertaken in the first trimester of Year 2 of your MPsych(Clin), this placement offers opportunities for exposure to a wide range of professional experiences, supervised by an experienced Board Approved clinical psychologist.

Consisting of a minimum of 350 hours of supervised practice towards the total training hours requirement of your course, your placement must include a minimum of 150 hours of client contact time and one hour of supervision per 15 placement hours.

The unit will broaden your experience with the diversity of client problems encountered in clinical practice, applying a variety of different clinical skills (assessment, treatment and professional).

Completion of a case study, written in a style suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, will also help you to hone your skills in research, analysis and communication.

Notes

Notes: Students must be compliant with all mandatory documentation requirements for the duration of their enrolment in a post-graduate professional psychology program.

As per the Course Rules, students are required to submit evidence of the following:

  1. Provisional Registration with AHPRA/Psychology Board of Australia (Students entering the program under Rule C must provide evidence of General Registration with AHPRA)
  2. National Police Check
  3. Working with Children Check

In addition to the above, students are required to sign and submit the following prior to enrolling in a placement unit:

  1. Confidentiality Agreement
  2. Student Declaration
  3. Evidence of vaccination as currently required by NSW Health for Psychologists

Students whose mandatory documentation is not current/valid will not be permitted to enrol in a placement unit and will be withdrawn from a placement unit prior to census day.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. competently conduct a clinical interview and demonstrate facility in the assessment of common psychological disorders using culturally appropriate methods;
  2. apply theories of the causes of psychological disorders to develop a case formulation of a presenting problem;
  3. deliver an intervention in a culturally responsive manner for a common psychological disorder;
  4. demonstrate an understanding of the roles of other professionals and be able to liaise effectively with other professionals where appropriate;
  5. engage in self-reflective practice and monitor ongoing progress towards treatment goals;
  6. write a case study report suitable for publication in a scientific journal including a literature review of current practice and the underlying theoretical and empirical bases for assessment and intervention, evaluation of the outcomes of assessment and treatment, and a discussion of the implications for practice; and
  7. demonstrate application of ethical principles and professional issues underlying psychological practice.
