Unit information

To meet the requirements of the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) this unit is mandatory. You will undertake ten days of online professional experience and complete compulsory assessment tasks each week.

In this unit you will develop an understanding of classroom management within whole school approaches, and gain insight into the importance of high quality teaching practice in supporting student behaviour in the classroom. Your observation, data collection and reporting skills will be finely tuned and you will further develop your practice of critical reflection. For assessment purposes you will be watching video footage taken in real life classrooms and being asked to participate in online forum discussions about the educational theories that underpin a high quality teaching practice.

You will complete 10 days of online virtual professional experience. Attendance in a classroom is not required.

Notes

EDUC540 involves students engaging in observations and online forum discussions regarding the theory that underpins quality teaching practice. This is an Online Professional Experience unit, which utilises video footage made in classrooms. Students DO NOT undertake any part of this unit in a school.There is flexibility with the times of the week/ day that students engage with the unit materials, however, there are compulsory assessment tasks that records 'attendance'.

Students enrolling in the subsequent unit EDUC550 will need to obtain a valid Working with Children Check clearance prior to undertaking their first Professional Experience in NSW schools, or equivalent in their respect state or territory schooling sector.Please see the Office for Professional Learning Important Information webpage for more information.

This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research into how students learn, including knowledge of child and adolescent development, and the implications for teaching by observing recordings of teacher practice, gathering data, analysing, evaluating findings informed by current research literature, and synthesising knowledge of effective teacher practice (GTSD 1.1.1, 1.2.1);
  2. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, substance and structure of the content and teaching strategies of teaching areas (including literacy and numeracy in primary and secondary contexts), by observing teacher practice, and critiquing in terms of current research literature (GTSD 1.5.1, 2.1.1);
  3. demonstrate understanding of a range of teaching strategies including verbal and non-verbal communication to support student engagement by observing teacher practice, and critiquing in terms of current research literature (GTSD 3.3.1, 3.5.1);
  4. identify, observe and critique practising teachers’ strategies to support inclusive student participation, engagement in classroom activities, the management of challenging behaviours, and implications for mental health, informed by research literature (GTSD 4.1.1, 4.2.1, 4.3.1, 4.4.1);
  5. demonstrate understanding of the purpose of providing timely and appropriate feedback to students about their learning by observing teacher practice, and critiquing in terms of current research literature (GTSD 5.2.1); and
  6. demonstrate an understanding of the sources of professional learning, a rationale for continued professional learning and the implications for improved student learning by engaging in collaborative professional learning processes (GTSD 6.2.1, 6.4.1, 7.4.1).
