Unit information

This unit will support you in engaging with philosophies and theories of place and space as they relate to children and early childhood settings.

It encompasses sense of place, place attachment and place identity, and relates these to childhood experiences and memories of place. You will explore personal and professional understandings of place and space as well as analyse and construct plans for both indoor and outdoor spaces in early childhood settings, engaging with the issues of children's participation rights.

This unit focuses on children from birth to age five years.

Pre-requisites
candidature in AssocDTeach(PacFocus) or BEd(EC-Prim) or BEd(Studs) or BEd(ECEC) (Rule c)

Notes

Students enrolled Online in the AssocDTeach(PacFocus) and BEd(EC-Prim) and BEdStuds complete 1-2 hours professional field experience in an early childhood education centre for purposes of assessment. Before entering the setting, all students must have completed online Anaphylaxis training, an online Child Protection module, and have obtained a valid Working with Children Check clearance (for those students wishing to complete their placement in NSW) or equivalent (for those students wishing to complete their placement outside NSW). Please see the Office for Professional Learning Important Information webpage for more information.

This unit addresses ACECQA's Curriculum requirements, referred to as Curriculum Specifications (CS).

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. discuss and illustrate key philosophies and theories of place and space (CS 5.1, 5.2);
  2. analyse indoor and outdoor spaces in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) settings in relation to philosophies and theories of place and space (CS 3.6, 3.8, 3.9, 5.2);
  3. apply understandings of the nature of place and space to the planning and implementation of changes in early childhood settings (CS 2.4, 3.9, 4.4, 6.3);
  4. apply independent judgement to articulate his/her philosophy of place and space in relation to early childhood education and pedagogy (CS 6.3, 6.5); and
  5. demonstrate professional standards of communication and literacy (CS 6.3).
