Unit information
This unit is designed to develop your knowledge of the impact of historical, cultural, political and economic factors on discourses and practices affecting young children.
You will consider theoretical and philosophical perspectives and critique the manner in which you accept, are hesitant about or refrain from particular viewpoints of children and childhood, with reference to child-rearing and early education.
Attention is also given to identifying and debating personal, social and professional views of young children within varied communities from a global perspective.

Notes
This unit requires contact with children, teachers, parents and community members in both early childhood education centres and the wider community for the purposes of assessment. Before entering the setting, all students must have completed online Anaphylaxis training, an online Child Protection module, and have obtained a valid Working with Children Check clearance (for those students wishing to complete their placement in NSW) or equivalent (for those students wishing to complete their placement outside NSW). Please see the Office for Professional Learning Important Information webpage for more information.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- explain and discuss various constructs of young children and apply these understandings to the early childhood profession (CS 4.2, 4.3);
- interpret and apply selected philosophical and sociological theories of children and childhood in analysing images and practices that affect young children (CS 4.1, 4.2, 4.3);
- employ critical analysis and reflection for identifying and exploring historical, cultural, political and economic influences on (i) young children and (ii) our understandings of children and childhood (CS 3.5, 4.1, 4.2, 5.5);
- based on selected theories and concepts, and using the stipulated methods, investigate personal and professional values and assumptions about how children and childhood are viewed by individuals, organisations and governments across society (CS 3.5, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.5); and
- apply independent judgement to demonstrate advanced standards of communication and literacy, modelling skills applicable in a professional career (CS 3.5, 4.3).
