Unit information
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family and cultural issues bring a unique dimension to the developmental stages of childhood and adolescence. Examine these factors and build your knowledge of the complex interplay between communities and child and adolescent development with this unit.
Introducing you to concepts surrounding trans-generational trauma, parental unemployment, substance abuse, family violence, educational and health issues, this unit will help you to develop an understanding of the impact of social determinants on young people and their families.
Study this unit, to equip yourself with the foundation to understand cultural influences on development, and explore culturally appropriate interventions for child and adolescent development in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander contexts.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- describe the developmental stages of childhood and adolescence while taking into account Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, family, and cultural issues;
- identify and describe the impact of social determinants (eg. trans-generational trauma, parental unemployment, substance abuse, family violence, educational and health issues) on young people and their families in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander context; and
- identify and discuss appropriate interventions for children and adolescents in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander contexts.
